JUST THE FACTS, MA'AM

Name: Wyatt Cain

Aliases: The kids in school sometimes called him White Cane, for shits and giggles. But that's the closest he's ever got to an alias.

Age and/or birthday: Wyatt is in his late thirties, except for the fact he was locked up for whoknowshowlong. He's actually in his late forties, but due to magically animated suspension and lol!fairytale!land, his physical age is still 36-to-8-or-9-ish. He doesn't have a lot of lines to his face, and on a good day his easygoing smiles'll shave off at least five years. Consequently, on one of his bad, tired, exhausted emo days, you can add another decade.

Indeterminate age ftw? No? Oh, alright.

The mattress lands in the bed frame with the most satisfying thwump Wyatt's heard in several annuals. He brushes his hands on the front of his pants with a proud little grin and looks at his partner in crime.

"All in a day's work."

Character name: Wyatt Cain
Genre (TV/books/etc): TV
Fandom: Tin Man
Birthday (if applicable: Unknown, as far as I know. Not that I feel Wyatt's the kind to celebrate his own birthday.

Canon point: End of series, standing on the balcony, looking out over the O.Z as it once was.

Why this Character and Canon point?: Wyatt's a hard headed, stubborn, ex cop grump master who's been through enough shit in his life to justify his attitude. He's quiet, a man of few words even when he needs to whip out random book smarts or set a low level crook straight. He's a guy who lost his heart (or just had it tortured real good and proper until it broke into itty bitty smithereens and lost all function). At the end of the show, Cain's begun to piece his heart together again, but to my mind he isn't near done.

Another reason why I want this canon point is because the show is awesome (and corny, and kooky, and plain adorkable in places), and I want to be able to draw from all of it. All the relationships he's built up over the past fortnight, all the rediscoveries, everything.

Including his understated bromance with Glitch. Yeah. Him and Glitch become firm friends over the course of the show, and Hell would have to freeze over before I ignore all the warm and fuzzy.

Programmed Possession: I can't pick! He has so many iconic trinkets! There's his Tin Man star (think generic Sheriff's badge from the old West), the miniature horse his son made for him ten or so years ago (a horse that stopped a bullet and saved his life, no less!), there's his gun and his holster... There's his wedding ring.

I think I'll go with the horse. It holds the most sentimental value (and it will be a small comfort when he finds his wedding ring missing). The horse is tiny to the point where it fits easily in the palm of his hand, painted white and brown, and there's a mashed up bullet embedded in it.

Abilities/Weaknesses:

He's damaged goods, but damn near impossible to kill. He's survived, in the space of not even a week:

* stayed somewhat sane and in pretty good health despite spending a decade in a tin box

* jumping off a humongous cliff into a raging river after being bitten by a poisonous monster hound thingie set on eating him and his motley crew whole

* being beaten to a pulp, then shot and then falling out of a window ten or twenty stories up and falling through thick, thick ice into a frozen lake (okay, so he got help from the miniature horse tucked into his breast pocket (stopped the bullet) and a friend (Glitch treated his frozen stiff grouchy self from hypothermia))

* being shot, again, albeit just in the shoulder

Even canon says it. He's got nine lives.

-----

Relatively sane is not the same as actually sane:

* suffers claustrophobia, to the point where he cannot shut himself into a room to sleep at night. He'd rather sleep outside. His biggest fear is ending up in one of the tin suits again. He knows he wouldn't survive another stint in one, no matter that it keeps you alive and fit and almost entirely immobile. He'd lose his mind.

* is distrustful to a fault unless he knows you

* trigger happy, but not an entirely good marksman

Psychology/Personality:

There's a lot of things that can be said about Wyatt Cain. He's a father, a husband only just starting to come to terms with being a widower. He was part of the Resistance nine or ten years ago (canon doesn't always make chronological sense), and unfortunately for both him and his family, he was found out. As punishment, he had to spend the coming decade locked into a big scuba suit of sorts, made to watch a holographic representation of his family being abused over and over and over again. Courtesy of a nifty little trinket Glitch once designed.

On that note, Wyatt Cain is damaged goods. He spent ten years locked into a tin box, forced to watch his family being abused over and over again in a neverending holographic loop. That kind of thing leaves its mark (as if being locked up and kept in suspended animation for ten years isn't bad enough). And this is me stipulating things based on my studies as a Psychology major (no, not clinical psych, but behavioural sciences): Wyatt Cain is damaged goods. Yes, he's gotten better. Yes, he's starting to heal. But you don't walk away from all the things he's been through without some scars. He doesn't trust people unless he has some sort of visual evidence to go by and he simply has to put his misgivings aside for the greater good. He can't handle small spaces. He's incredibly protective of the people he cares about, up to and including going on what is almost certainly a suicide mission to overthrow the evil Witch. It is just not done. Not by a handful of people backed by a few dozen Resistance fighters.

But that was then, and now things are slowly changing for the better. No longer is he so incredibly consumed with the need for revenge that he doesn't think before drawing his gun on you before he starts asking questions (that's a thing he does; he's trigger happy). Neither is he quite so literally heartless as the Tin Woodsman he's based on - he's rediscovering his heart, or the fact that he still has one after all the pain he's been put through.

Most of all, he's a good guy even when he's a total grouch. He's also a cowboy/sheriff stereotype in the flesh, complete with hat, coat and revolver. He's a good guy, and he's so much more straightforward than any of my pups. No scheming, no manipulating, just getting to know people. Scheming and manipulating are all good and make for fun times, but lately, I've come to realize that with uni, my brain just doesn't have any space left for either of it.

History:

In canon, we know four things about Wyatt's past:

* He had a wife and son
* He was a cop stationed in Central City
* He was secretly a Resistance fighter, found out by his main antagonist, Zero (also a Central City cop)
* He spent the last ten years in a tin box standing in his front yard watching aforementioned family being brutalized by Zero

This is not enough to go by for my brain to be entirely content. So, to my mind, I imagine Wyatt dreamed of becoming a policeman since he was a very small boy. He'd go into Central City with his parents every now and then, and just couldn't stop dreaming the dream. Back then, the Tin Men were the Queen's most trusted keepers of the law. They were good men, who helped put bad guys to justice. He grew up, and with the help of his family, applied to the police academy, made the cut and ran its course.

Somewhere along the way, he met a girl a few years older than him, and knew right then and there he was going to marry her one day. They fell in love, got married, and after wishing for a child several years, they had a boy.

Wyatt counts the two happiest days of his life as the day he married Adora, and the day she gave birth to Jeb.

His life was complete. He had everything he'd ever wanted.

But then the O.Z became a much darker place, as the Queen's youngest daughter died. From there on in, nothing was ever the same again. The Queen grew weak, and her remaining daughter saw a chance to start laying down plans. By the time the usurper Princess claimed the throne for her own some years later, the Black Coats had already taken control of most of the O.Z, and Wyatt had lost everything, except for his life. He remained in his one man prison, in suspended animation while his mind raged against the crimes committed against him and his friends and family. For ten years, he plotted revenge. For ten years, his heart slowly stopped entering into things until one day it was simply inconsequential. Until one day, he could barely feel a thing.

General

Character Name: Wyatt Cain
Species (human/alien/vampire/other?): Human (O.Z-ian)
Extra-human/abnormal abilities, if any?: Verily, verily hard to kill. Tough as nails.

Psychology

1. Is it okay for your character's thoughts to be read/their mind to be probed? Yes. Wyatt won't like having his mind probed, but I'm an easy mun.

2. Is it okay for any of your character’s intense/distressing memories to be seen/heard/read in this situation? Definitely. :D

3. What kind of mind does your character have? Are they disturbed at all? Are their thoughts ordered or jumbled? Disturbed... Not exactly. But Wyatt is troubled by his past, and being stuck in a scuba box for a decade's messed him up. He can get obsessive about things.

4. Is it okay for your character’s emotions to be sensed? Yes. Just look for clues in narrative, I'll make sure there's stuff to reveal some of his inner workings even when he's stone faced.

5. Does your character have a weak or strong mind? Are they susceptible to influence or hypnotism? Strong. Very strong. He watched his family be torn apart for TEN FLIPPIN' YEARS and came away relatively sane. Having said that, I don't think he's got any defenses against hypnotism.

6. Does your character have supernatural/mental fortification against mind-reading or telepathic communication? Nope.

7. In the case of characters who are extra-sentient/psychic and can just 'know' things about people, can the muns of these characters use the powers of Wikipedia to get information about your character? Sure thing. If anything seems slightly off, I'll poke ya. Wiki's a lovely place to get info, but it isn't always a hundred percent accurate.

8. If so, is there anything that should absolutely never ever be brought up? Don't talk about his wife or son, unless you're DG or Glitch.

9. Anything that should absolutely be brought up? Anything you think's interesting enough.

10. Will thoughts in the narration be up for grabs? If so, how will you indicate these? Italics/strikes/something else? Yes. Italics.

11. Does your character have any fears/phobias that you wouldn't mind being exploited? Ones that you'd like to NOT be exploited? Exploit away!

* claustrophobia

Physiology

1. Is it okay for your character to be affected by chemical agents? Fear toxins, for example? Definitely. He'll bounce back fast, though.

2. Does your character have any unique biological difference that would affect their resistance to toxins/chemical substances? Not that I know of, no. Apart from the fact he's born and raised in the O.Z. Only drug we really hear about in canon is a magic mist that the evil (wicked witch) Sorceress manufactures.

3. Does your character have any notable genetic/supernatural/biological difference that would make their blood in any way different to a regular baseline human's (that would make them taste different if they were fed on by a vampire, for example)? ...I have no idea. I suppose he'll just have to get himself fed on, and we'll see what the vamp says.

But, since the O.Z is a magical place, it's only logical that this extends to its inhabitants. Only question is what does magic taste like?

Physical

1. How okay are you with your character coming to physical harm? Very okay.

2. How okay are you with your character's home/possessions being targeted by bad guys? YES PLEASE ~puppy dawg eyes~

3. Can your character be impacted by telekinesis? Absotively.

4. With regard to vampires, would your character be willing to be a donor? Might depend on the vampire, honestly. And the context. And in what sort of self destructive mood Wyatt is.

5. If no, then how about unwilling? He's fresh meat. Incredibly gorgeous fresh meat. Have at him!

6. With regard to shapeshifters, are you okay with having those with this power taking the shape of your character? Sure. It'll piss him off, but again, I'm easy.

7. If your character has any superhuman abilities, would you be okay with these being replicated by those who have the power to absorb/take on the powers of others? Sure thing. Everyone can use a few extra lives every now and then.

8. In a physical confrontation, is it okay if characters who have the power to sense/foresee/predict movements use this to their advantage against your character? Yes.

9. Are you willing to participate in plots where your character will sustain damage outside of a fight, such as in situations with torture, environmental hazards, or accidents? Yeeeeees :D

10. Is there anything about them that would stand out noticeably (things like scars, physical augmentations, illness, anomalies, etc.) if they were ever injured or otherwise examined by a doctor? Are any of these things noticeable to others without close inspection?

Scars:

* left eyebrow neatly cut through by a fine scar that's barely noticeable. Just seems like there's a gap in the hairs.

* bullet scars in his left shoulder, and a few here and there that I haven't specified. He's been shot at in the line of duty, but never too badly

* bite marks/puncture wounds in his right thigh just below his buttock - damn Papay

Magics

1. Can your character be influenced and tempted by magical or supernatural means? Yes.

2. If yes, will someone with the ability be able to find this out about them, and in what areas (think the seven deadly sins) can your character be tempted? Lemme get back to yous on this.

3. Could your character be glamoured (a form of mind control employed by vampires to make humans compliant/alter their memories etc.)? Go ahead.

4. Can your character be effected by spells of any kind, and are there any specific types to which they would be immune? Affect away!

5. Can your character's presence be sensed by characters with the power to read auras/pick up generalized vibes from people? Definitely. He's kind of hard to miss.

6. If yes, what kind of stand-out things about your character can be sensed? He's a good guy with a tragic past. On the mend.

7. With regard to characters that can sense danger/receive visions/predict general doom, are you okay with your character being the subject of any of this, if the occasion arises? Yes. More than!

Privacy

1. Will your character change their name as it is shown on the map? If so, what will they change it to? Mmmmmnope.

2. If they’re able, will they ever opt to hide their location on the map? Every chance he gets. He doesn't like being monitored.

3. If your character is from an earlier point in their canon than another member of your cast, what is and is not okay for your fellow castmate to spill the beans about regarding your character’s future? I think this is one of those N/A cases.

4. With regard to characters that like to snoop, can they find anything that's been publicly said by your character through the tablets? Yes.

5. How about privately? Nope.

6. Is there anything you'd especially like to be known about your character, for the purposes of amusement? Not that I can think of.

7. Anything you especially don't? Same as above.

8 Do you like threadhopping (a character not already in a thread jumping in unexpectedly to reply to a comment), and are you okay with other people threadhopping in your threads and posts? Just one-on-ones for now, please.

The O.Z was saved. The Witch, vanquished, and the royal family reunited. They'd watched the two suns reemerge from behind the moons after the dreaded eclipse, together, two groups linked together by one, extraordinary young woman. The 'heroes'. The 'saviours' of the O.Z. The prodigal daughter and her rag-tag team of mismatched metaphorical relatives-in-arms. Uncles, father figures, mentors... Tutor was nowhere to be seen, but right that moment, no one seemed to spare one single thought to what had happened to everyone else. To the grunts on ground level, to the rebels and the minions, and the lives - innocent and not - that had been destroyed forever.

For just one moment, they could all forget the hard work ahead of them.

Cain, however, was far too preoccupied with his past to spare so much as one thought to the future. Despite the warmth of the suns, all he could think about was how big his boy was now, and how many years he had lost for nothing. Because he was careless. Because, despite the dangers he faced every single day, he and his wife never hesitated to open up their home to perfect strangers and friends alike. They had gotten careless, or perhaps they had simply failed to see the escalating darkness, spreading across the land.

Maybe they'd simply wanted to believe things weren't as bad as they'd feared.

He lowered his eyes to the pale, matted ring on his finger; clenched his fist, and looked down the line of his friends - stacked up and standing in line as if to receive honors, and for what?

"I need to find Jeb," he told Raw, and silently made himself scarce. Behind him, Raw surreptitiously closed the gap and continued watching the city on the hill, illuminated as were this its glory days.

He needed to find Jeb, his son, and make sure he was all right down there on the ground, where chaos still ruled, and the Witch's men were still fighting the Resistance.

He had no idea where to go from there.
